Sheetal Devi and Sarita Kumari Exit Paris Paralympics 2024 After Strong Performances

Paris, September 1, 2024 — India's para archers, Sheetal Devi and Sarita Kumari, put forth valiant efforts at the Paris Paralympics 2024, but both athletes were ultimately eliminated in their respective rounds, concluding their inspiring journeys in the individual women’s archery event.

Sheetal Devi’s Close Contest

Seventeen-year-old Sheetal Devi, hailing from Kishtwar, Jammu and Kashmir, faced a formidable opponent in the round of 16: Chile’s Mariana Zuniga, a Tokyo 2020 silver medallist. Despite leading after the first end, Sheetal found herself tied with Zuniga after three ends. A single-point difference in the final end sealed Sheetal’s fate, with Zuniga advancing with a score of 138-137.

Sheetal's remarkable story is defined by her overcoming physical challenges—she was born without arms due to Phocomelia, a congenital disorder. Discovered by the Indian Army in 2019, Sheetal’s journey from Kishtwar to the global stage has been nothing short of extraordinary. Though her Paralympic debut did not culminate in a medal, her near-record performance in the qualification round and her strong showing in the competition have established her as a future star in para archery.

Sarita Kumari’s Quarterfinal Showdown

Sarita Kumari, another medal hopeful from India, had a strong start, defeating Italy's Eleonora Sarti in the round of 16. However, her quarterfinal match against Turkey's Oznur Girdi Cure, the top seed and new world record holder, proved to be a formidable challenge. Despite a strong comeback, Sarita could not overcome the deficit, and Cure advanced with a decisive victory.

Sarita, who hails from Faridabad, Haryana, has been a prominent figure in Indian para archery. Her performance in Paris follows her success at the Asian Para Games and the World Archery Para Championship, where she won multiple medals, further establishing her as a key figure in the sport.

India’s Medal Hopes at Paris 2024

The exits of Sheetal Devi and Sarita Kumari leave India still searching for its sixth medal at the Paris 2024 Paralympics. With other events still ongoing, Indian athletes continue to strive for podium finishes.

The inspiring journeys of these athletes serve as a testament to their determination and skill, highlighting the rising talent in Indian para sports. As they return home, both Sheetal and Sarita carry the hopes and aspirations of millions, having demonstrated resilience and excellence on the world stage.
