Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday described a Special Investigation Team (SIT) report on alleged links between Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi and Pakistan as “damaging and damning,” saying it points to a conspiracy that threatens national sovereignty.

The state cabinet took up the findings informally on Oct. 6, nearly four weeks after the government received the sealed dossier on Sept. 10. The SIT, constituted on Feb. 17 to probe Pakistani national Ali Tauqeer Sheikh and his associates for suspected anti-India activities, zeroed in on claims that Sheikh had cultivated contacts with Elizabeth Colburn Gogoi, the British-born wife of the Kaliabor parliamentarian.

“It is a very damning and damaging report,” Sarma told reporters, adding that portions remain classified under the Official Secrets Act.

According to the chief minister, the inquiry uncovered what he termed “startling facts,” including facilitation by Pakistan’s Ministry of Interior for the Assam MP’s travel and the alleged role of a foreign national married to an elected Indian lawmaker.

Gogoi, deputy leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha and president of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee, dismissed the accusations as a political ploy. He confirmed visiting Pakistan in 2013 while his wife consulted on a climate-change project but insisted he never met government functionaries or intelligence operatives.

Sarma said a press conference with national media will be convened shortly to release a synopsis and selected annexures. The full cabinet is expected to deliberate on the report later this week, ending a delay triggered by parallel investigations into the death of popular singer Zubeen Garg.

Advanced Micro Devices surged 23% in early trading Monday after unveiling a multi-year accord to supply OpenAI with graphics processors capable of delivering six gigawatts of artificial-intelligence compute capacity, a pact that could funnel tens of billions of dollars to the chipmaker.

Under the agreement, AMD will begin deploying hundreds of thousands of its Instinct accelerators in the second half of 2026, starting with an initial one-gigawatt installation. The companies also formalized a performance-linked warrant that could grant OpenAI ownership of up to 160 million AMD shares—roughly a 10% stake—once agreed deployment and performance targets are met.

"This partnership is a major step in building the compute capacity needed to realize AI's full potential," OpenAI Chief Executive Sam Altman said.

AMD Chief Executive Lisa Su added that the collaboration "will deliver AI compute at massive scale."

The transaction comes barely a month after OpenAI committed to purchase 10 gigawatts of systems from Nvidia, whose CUDA software stack remains the industry default. Analysts interpreted the AMD accord as validation of the company’s Instinct line, while noting that Nvidia’s technology still commands the broader developer ecosystem.

AMD’s ROCm open software platform continues to trail Nvidia’s CUDA in both adoption and stability, according to industry assessments. The two firms said they will jointly refine hardware-software integration to narrow that gap.

Nvidia shares slipped 1% on the announcement. OpenAI signaled plans to scale beyond the initial six gigawatts in the coming years as demand for training and inference workloads grows.

Police arrested a 41-year-old New Jersey man outside Washington’s Saint Matthew’s Cathedral early Sunday after officers discovered a makeshift campsite containing a Molotov cocktail and vials of liquid on the steps of the landmark church.

Louis Geri of Vineland was taken into custody without incident shortly before 6 a.m. when members of the Metropolitan Police Department’s Red Mass security detail found him in a tent on the cathedral entrance. Officials said Geri had previously been barred from the property and refused orders to leave.

The Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit and Arson Task Force were called to examine the suspicious items, and the 1700 block of Rhode Island Avenue NW was sealed off while investigators worked. Authorities later confirmed there was “no ongoing threat to public safety.”

Shortly before 6:00 a.m. on Sunday, October 5, 2025, Metropolitan Police Department members assigned to a detail for the Red Mass at Saint Matthew’s Cathedral engaged an individual who had set up a tent on the steps of the cathedral.

Geri has been charged with unlawful entry, threats to kidnap or injure, and possession of an incendiary device. The FBI, Joint Terrorism Task Force, and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are assisting MPD with the investigation.

The Red Mass—an annual service marking the opening of the Supreme Court term—proceeded as scheduled inside the cathedral while officers processed the scene. Police have not disclosed a possible motive and are asking anyone who notices suspicious activity to call 202-727-9099 or text 50411.

About 3,000 people filled London’s Trafalgar Square on 5 October 2025 to mark the second anniversary of the 7 October 2023 Hamas assault on Israel that left roughly 1,200 dead and 251 taken hostage.

The memorial, organised by the Board of Deputies of British Jews, unfolded under visibly tightened security days after a suspected terror attack outside a Manchester synagogue that killed two Jewish men and wounded three others on 2 October.

Chief Rabbi Sir Ephraim Mirvis told the crowd:

“Today, we recall the precious lives who were mercilessly taken from our midst on 7 October. We remember all subsequent atrocities since that original day.”

Sharone Lifschitz, whose parents were among those abducted, said her family had lived in limbo for almost two years. Keith Black, chair of the Jewish Leadership Council, warned that antisemitism in Britain is “out of control.”

Twenty-three candles were lit for the victims, and attendees recited the Kaddish prayer before chanting “bring them home” in support of the remaining hostages in Gaza. Similar commemorations were held across Israel and other countries on 7 October.

The San Francisco 49ers ruled out quarterback Brock Purdy, wide receivers Jauan Jennings and Ricky Pearsall for Thursday night's Week 5 game against the Los Angeles Rams, team officials said.

Purdy suffered a toe injury in the season-opening win over Seattle and aggravated it after the Week 4 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars, missing Weeks 2 and 3 earlier this season. Backup Mac Jones will make his third start of the 2025 season, completing 66.3 percent of his passes for 563 yards, four touchdowns and one interception in two prior wins.

The 3-1 49ers and 3-1 Rams meet at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, with the winner taking sole possession of first place in the NFC West. Both teams have dealt with injuries this season, including San Francisco's absences of wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk with a knee injury and tight end George Kittle with a hamstring issue.

Jennings sustained ankle and rib injuries during the Jaguars game, according to the team's injury report. Pearsall suffered a knee injury in the third quarter of that contest. Wide receiver Jordan Watkins also is out with a calf injury.

49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said Monday of Pearsall's injury, "They're thinking more of like a minor PCL or something like that, is what our guess is. You know, just landing on it hard, so hopefully it won't be too bad."

Purdy said Tuesday, "If I can play this game, I want to play. Obviously, I want to get right and get healthy and everything, but we need to win this game against the Rams. So that's how I'm looking at it."

Jones aggravated a preseason knee injury in Week 3 but participated fully in practice this week and carries no injury designation, though he plans to wear a knee brace.

The 49ers expect to elevate practice squad quarterback Adrian Martinez as the backup. Officials from the 49ers were not immediately available for further comment on return timelines.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled a commemorative Rs 100 coin featuring an image of Bharat Mata for the first time on Indian currency during Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh centenary celebrations on October 1.

The coin includes the national emblem on one side and Bharat Mata in Varada Mudra with a lion and swayamsevaks saluting her on the other, according to a statement from the Prime Minister's Office. It also bears the RSS motto "Rashtraya Swaha, Idam Rashtraya, Idam Na Mama."

The event took place at the Dr. Ambedkar International Centre in New Delhi to mark the RSS's 100 years since its founding on Vijayadashami in 1925 by Keshav Baliram Hedgewar. Modi, a former RSS pracharak, addressed volunteers and highlighted the organization's role in nation-building.

Modi said, "For the first time in the history of independent India the image of Bharat Mata has been featured on Indian currency which marks a moment of great pride and historical significance."

He added that the coin and a special postage stamp, depicting RSS swayamsevaks in the 1963 Republic Day Parade, honor the group's contributions to the freedom struggle and social service.

The U.S. Supreme Court deferred action on Tuesday on President Donald Trump's request to remove Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook from her position, allowing her to remain on the job pending oral arguments in January 2026.

The court's order stated that the application for a stay presented to Chief Justice John Roberts and referred to the full court is "deferred pending oral argument in January 2026." The decision maintains a lower court injunction blocking Cook's removal while litigation continues.

Trump sought to fire Cook on August 25, 2025, citing allegations that she committed mortgage fraud by listing two properties as her primary residence on separate loan applications in 2021, before her Senate confirmation to the Fed Board. Cook denies the allegations and has not been charged with any wrongdoing.

U.S. District Judge Jia Cobb ruled on September 9, 2025, that the claims likely did not constitute sufficient cause for removal under the Federal Reserve Act, which permits dismissal only for misconduct. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit upheld the injunction on September 16, 2025.

The Justice Department argued in a September 18, 2025, filing that the lower court rulings interfered with the president's removal authority. Solicitor General D. John Sauer wrote that Cook lacks a Fifth Amendment property interest in her role and that due process protections do not apply.

White House spokesman Kush Desai said in a statement, "President Trump lawfully removed Lisa Cook for cause from the Federal Reserve Board of Governors. We look forward to ultimate victory after presenting our oral arguments before the Supreme Court in January."

Cook's attorneys, Abbe Lowell and Norm Eisen, said in a statement, "The Court's decision rightly allows Governor Cook to continue in her role on the Federal Reserve Board, and we look forward to further proceedings consistent with the Court's order."

Cook's 14-year term on the seven-member Fed Board is set to expire in 2038. Trump has nominated four potential governors, which would give him a majority if Cook's removal succeeds.

The Justice Department has launched a criminal probe into the mortgage allegations and issued grand jury subpoenas in Georgia and Michigan, according to court documents.

Officials from the White House and Federal Reserve were not immediately available for further comment.

The Trump administration blamed Democrats for a US government shutdown in memos to federal employees and messages on agency websites, as funding lapsed at midnight on September 30, 2025.

The shutdown, the first since 2018, followed Congress's failure to pass a continuing resolution by the end of fiscal year 2025. Republicans supported a clean funding bill, while Democrats sought extensions for Affordable Care Act subsidies set to expire in December, congressional officials said.

Memos from the Office of Management and Budget directed agencies including the Departments of Health and Human Services, Justice and Veterans Affairs to inform staff that President Donald Trump opposed a shutdown but that Democrats blocked the measure, according to agency spokespeople. A message on the Department of Housing and Urban Development website stated: "The Radical Left in Congress shut down the government."

Trump said in the Oval Office on September 30, "Democrats are to blame for the impending government shutdown and that they in particular would be 'very affected' by a funding lapse."

The memos also outlined plans for potential permanent layoffs of federal workers during the shutdown, unlike past furloughs with back pay, OMB officials said. The administration aimed to target positions "not consistent with the President's priorities."

Public Citizen filed a complaint with the Office of Special Counsel on September 30, alleging the communications violated the Hatch Act by using government resources for partisan messaging. Craig Holman of Public Citizen said, "The sheer crassness of this partisan advertisement by HUD using taxpayer dollars to campaign against Democrats and promote the Trump administration is going to make it exceedingly difficult for even a neutered ethics office to ignore."

A PBS News/NPR/Marist poll released on September 30 found 38% of voters would blame Republicans for a shutdown, 27% would blame Democrats and 31% would blame both parties.

The shutdown will furlough about 2 million federal workers and halt non-essential services, including national park operations and small business loans, according to OMB estimates. Senate Majority Leader John Thune said on October 1 that talks would resume immediately to end the shutdown.

Officials from the White House and Democratic leadership were not immediately available for further comment.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and U.S. President Donald Trump may meet on the sidelines of the 47th ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur on October 26-27, officials from the Indian Ministry of External Affairs said on Wednesday.

The potential meeting comes amid tensions over U.S. tariffs on Indian goods, which Trump raised to 50% in August 2025 to address a trade deficit and India's purchases of Russian oil, according to White House officials. Bilateral trade reached $71.4 billion in 2024, per Malaysian Investment Development Authority data.

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim confirmed Trump's attendance after a personal call from the U.S. president, Anwar's office said in a statement. Modi's participation aligns with his attendance at previous ASEAN summits, the Indian officials said.

Discussions may cover trade tariffs, H-1B visas and strategic ties, the officials said. Trump imposed the tariffs after India and the U.S. failed to reach a trade deal by an August 1 deadline, a U.S. Trade Representative statement said.

Anwar said in a July 31 statement, "President Trump has confirmed his attendance at the 47th ASEAN Summit." The summit will address regional issues including Myanmar's conflict and maritime disputes.

The leaders last met in person at the White House on February 13, 2025. A phone call between them occurred in June 2025, the White House said.

Indian officials said the meeting could be the only face-to-face opportunity for the leaders in 2025, given scheduling conflicts for other events. Officials from the White House and Indian Ministry of External Affairs were not immediately available for further comment.

Police in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, said on Tuesday the violence during an I Love Muhammad protest on September 26 was preplanned, with a text message from an aide to cleric Tauqeer Raza Khan mobilizing crowds after he rejected an earlier peace message as fake.

The clashes erupted after Friday prayers when protesters gathered outside the Ala Hazrat Dargah and Raza's residence, leading to stone-pelting and injuries to 10 policemen, according to officials. Authorities imposed Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita restricting movement and suspended internet services for 48 hours.

Senior Superintendent of Police Anurag Arya said Nadeem Khan, a member of the Ittehad-e-Millat Council led by Raza, sent the text message directing supporters to assemble despite assurances to police that no demonstration would occur. "The incident was not spontaneous but premeditated," Arya said.

District Magistrate Nitin Bansal said representatives Nadeem Khan and Nafees met officials on September 25 and submitted a signed letter pledging peaceful prayers without protest. "The next morning, Maulana Tauqeer Raza Khan released a video message saying the signed paper and everything was fake, and that they would proceed as per their initial plan," Bansal said.

Raza, Khan and seven others were arrested on September 27, with 39 people detained in total, the officials said. Police filed 10 FIRs against 180 named individuals, including Raza, and 2,500 unidentified rioters on charges of rioting, inciting violence and hurting religious sentiments.

Authorities identified eight illegal properties linked to Raza's associates for demolition, including those of Nadeem Khan, the officials said. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath directed strict action against those disturbing law and order.

Police expect to complete investigations within a week and file charge sheets. Officials from the Uttar Pradesh police were not immediately available for further comment on additional arrests.

Russian President Vladimir Putin is likely to visit India on December 5-6 for the annual bilateral summit with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, diplomatic officials said on Wednesday.

The visit, if confirmed, would be Putin's first to India since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. The two leaders last met in person at the BRICS summit in Kazan in October 2024.

Indian National Security Adviser Ajit Doval discussed the visit during talks in Moscow last week, where dates were nearly finalized, according to officials from the Indian Ministry of External Affairs. The summit will cover defense cooperation, energy trade and the International North-South Transport Corridor.

Kremlin foreign policy aide Yuri Ushakov said on Friday that Putin and Modi would prepare for the December trip during their meeting on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit in Tianjin, China. "The agenda includes strengthening the strategic partnership," Ushakov said.

The visit follows U.S. President Donald Trump's imposition of tariffs on Indian goods in August 2025 over New Delhi's purchases of discounted Russian oil. Bilateral trade reached $60 billion in 2024, with India defending the imports as replacing European supplies diverted after the Ukraine conflict.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov announced in March 2025 that Putin would visit India later in the year. Putin accepted Modi's invitation during a May 2025 phone call, the Kremlin said.

The leaders are expected to sign agreements on S-400 air defense system deliveries, due in 2025, and aim to double trade to $100 billion by 2030, according to ministry officials.

Officials from the Indian government and Kremlin were not immediately available for further comment on final confirmation.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reverted to the term "monkeypox" for the disease it had adopted as "mpox" in 2022, aligning with the virus's scientific name but diverging from the World Health Organization's nomenclature.

The change appeared on the CDC website in late September 2025, without a formal announcement or explanation from the agency, according to Department of Health and Human Services officials. The HHS oversees the CDC.

The World Health Organization adopted "mpox" in November 2022 to replace "monkeypox," a name in use since 1958 that originated from lab observations in monkeys but was inaccurate for transmission, primarily by rodents, and carried racist connotations, the WHO said at the time.

HHS spokesperson Wayne Pitts said in an email, "Monkeypox is the name of the viral disease caused by the monkeypox virus."

The virus, Orthopoxvirus monkeypox, causes mpox, a relative of smallpox with symptoms including rash and fever. The International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses updated the species name to Orthopoxvirus monkeypox in 2023, HHS officials said.

Dr. Joseph Cherabie, an infectious diseases expert at Washington University in St. Louis, said, "The first question is: 'Why?' It doesn't make any sense."

Dr. Balkissa Fanta, an infectious disease specialist at Northwestern University, said the reversion could exacerbate stigma, particularly among Black and African communities.

The change followed the Trump administration's return to office in January 2025, though officials did not link it to policy shifts. The CDC continues to use "mpox" in some materials updated in April 2025.

HHS officials were not immediately available for further comment on implementation or global coordination.

U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth called for a shift from "woke" to "warrior" culture in the military and decried diversity initiatives during a speech to hundreds of generals and admirals on Tuesday.

Hegseth addressed the commanders at Marine Corps Base Quantico in Virginia, where he issued 10 directives to overhaul military policies. The gathering followed a week of short-notice summons for senior officers from around the world, according to Pentagon officials.

Hegseth said the military had lost its way under previous leadership. "Foolish and reckless political leaders set the wrong compass heading and we lost our way. We became the 'Woke Department,'" he said.

He announced new physical fitness standards requiring all service members to meet the "highest male standard" in tests and grooming requirements. "No more fat generals and admirals in the halls of the Pentagon," Hegseth said. "If you do not meet the male level physical standards for combat positions, cannot pass a PT test or don't want to shave and look professional, it's time for a new position or a new profession."

The directives also eliminate diversity, equity and inclusion programs, identity months and equal opportunity offices, officials said. Hegseth said promotions based on race, gender quotas or "historic so-called firsts" contributed to "decades of decay."

"If the words I'm speaking today are making your heart sink, then you should do the honorable thing and resign. We would thank you for your service," Hegseth said.

President Donald Trump spoke after Hegseth and said the military was reawakening its warrior spirit. Trump suggested U.S. cities could serve as training grounds for troops.

The event followed Trump's executive order renaming the Department of Defense as the Department of War, a title last used in 1947, according to White House officials.

Pentagon officials said the directives take effect immediately. A spokesperson for the Defense Department was not immediately available for further comment.

India's Enforcement Directorate raided eight locations in Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh on Wednesday in a money laundering probe stemming from a Rs 152 crore ($18 million) bank fraud case involving businessman Ramana Rao Bolla and former bank manager Nutan Rakesh Singh.

The searches targeted premises linked to Bolla, Singh and associated entities in Mumbai, Nagpur, Vijayawada and other areas, agency officials said. The case originates from a 2022 complaint by Punjab National Bank's Vijayawada branch alleging fraud through fake import orders and fictitious transactions.

Agency teams seized documents, digital devices and incriminating materials during the operation, the officials said. The probe examines the flow of defrauded funds into shell companies and benami assets.

The fraud involved Bolla's firm, Bolla Enterprises, securing credit facilities worth Rs 152 crore from the bank between 2018 and 2021, according to the complaint filed with the Central Bureau of Investigation. Singh, then the branch's chief manager, approved the loans without due verification, the officials said.

Enforcement Directorate Additional Director Rohit Singhal said in a statement, "The searches uncovered evidence of layered transactions to disguise proceeds of crime. Further action will follow forensic analysis."

The case was registered under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act after the CBI filed a charge sheet in 2023, the officials said. Bolla and Singh face charges of cheating and criminal conspiracy.

Officials from the Enforcement Directorate were not immediately available for comment on potential arrests. The agency expects to file a prosecution complaint once the evidence is collated.

The Indian Army announced plans to procure 1,000 kamikaze drones and 1,000 surveillance drones at a cost of 10,000-15,000 crore rupees ($1.2-1.8 billion), following intense drone exchanges during the May 2025 India-Pakistan conflict.

The procurement, focused on indigenous development under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative, aims to counter asymmetric threats along the Line of Control and Line of Actual Control, army officials said on Friday. The announcement came after Operation Sindoor, a four-day military operation triggered by a terror attack in Pahalgam on April 22, 2025, that killed 25 tourists.

Operation Sindoor marked the first overt drone battle between India and Pakistan, with both sides deploying swarms of surveillance and loitering munitions, the officials said. India's use of SkyStriker kamikaze drones destroyed terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, according to a Defence Ministry statement.

The Army will prioritize systems like the Nagastra-1 loitering munition, developed by Solar Industries India Ltd in collaboration with the Defence Research and Development Organisation, the officials said. Trials of the Nagastra-1 conducted in Ladakh and Rajasthan in 2025 demonstrated its versatility in diverse terrains.

Army Chief Gen. Upendra Dwivedi said in a statement, "Drones are force multipliers in hybrid warfare, particularly against asymmetric tactics. This procurement will enhance precision strikes without risking personnel."

The initiative seeks 70% local content by 2027, with suppliers including Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd and private firms like IdeaForge, the officials said. It includes 450 units of the Nagastra-1R variant, ordered in September 2025 for 2.95 billion rupees.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh approved the accelerated procurement in July 2025, allocating funds to boost domestic manufacturing, a ministry statement said. The order builds on a $470 million investment in unmanned aerial vehicles planned over the next 12 to 24 months, according to Smit Shah, president of the Drone Federation of India.

The Army expects deliveries to begin in early 2026, with full integration into operational units by 2027, the officials said. Officials from the Defence Ministry declined to provide further details on the evaluation process.
