The Rishikesh-Karnaprayag railway project is progressing rapidly, promising improved connectivity for Char Dham pilgrims and boosting Uttarakhand’s tourism and trade.
The much-anticipated Rishikesh-Karnaprayag railway project, a key infrastructure initiative in Uttarakhand, is progressing rapidly. This ambitious project, envisioned as Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s dream initiative, aims to enhance connectivity, tourism, and economic opportunities in the state. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami recently provided an update on the project's advancements, confirming that it is on track for completion by 2026.
The railway line is expected to significantly ease the journey for devotees heading to Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri, and Yamunotri. With improved accessibility, thousands of pilgrims will be able to undertake their spiritual journey with greater ease, reducing travel time and road congestion.
This development aligns with the government’s vision to modernize religious tourism and strengthen pilgrim infrastructure in the Himalayan region.
The Rishikesh-Karnaprayag rail route will not only benefit pilgrims but also provide a massive boost to Uttarakhand’s tourism industry. Besides religious tourism, adventure sports such as rafting in Rishikesh and trekking in the Garhwal Himalayas will see a rise in visitors due to improved rail connectivity.
Additionally, a similar focus on tourism expansion is being seen in Tanakpur, where adventure activities are being promoted. The seamless railway connection will help travelers explore remote scenic locations of Uttarakhand with greater convenience.
In a recent development, the number of railway tracks at Karnaprayag station has been increased from 22 to 26, ensuring enhanced train operations. A ₹611 crore tender has been issued for the expansion, highlighting the government’s commitment to strengthening Uttarakhand’s rail infrastructure.
The Rishikesh-Karnaprayag railway project will feature 13 stations, of which two – Yognagari and Virbhadra – have already been completed. The remaining stations, including Shivpuri, Byasi, Devprayag, Maletha, Srinagar, Dhari Devi, Tilni, Gholtir, Gauchar, and Karnaprayag, are under development.
Upon completion, the railway network will significantly reduce travel time between Rishikesh and Karnaprayag, facilitating smoother movement for both passengers and freight transport.
The rail line will pass through 104 km of tunnels, ensuring smooth operations through the hilly terrain. Out of the 17 tunnels planned, over half have already been completed, showcasing efficient project execution.
Additionally, 19 bridges are planned to strengthen the railway infrastructure, with five already completed. This will ensure safe and efficient train movement across Uttarakhand’s challenging landscape.
The railway project will bring immense economic benefits, particularly to local businesses, traders, and industries. The enhanced transport network will facilitate faster movement of goods, encouraging trade and investment in the region.
Additionally, thousands of jobs have been generated due to ongoing railway construction activities, benefiting local workers and engineers involved in the project.
Beyond its economic and tourism significance, the Rishikesh-Karnaprayag railway line holds strategic importance for India’s defense sector. Given its proximity to sensitive border areas, the project has been designed to cater to logistical and operational needs of the Indian Army.
With modifications in station layouts and logistics planning, the railway will ensure smooth troop movement and equipment transportation whenever required.
The construction of tunnels had led to structural damage in some homes, prompting 628 complaints from affected families. Authorities have addressed these concerns, providing ₹12 crore in compensation to residents whose properties were impacted.
This step has been taken to ensure fair rehabilitation and maintain public support for the project.
The government has reaffirmed that the Rishikesh-Karnaprayag rail project is on track for completion by 2026. By 2025, partial operations may begin, bringing significant improvements in Uttarakhand’s connectivity.
Once operational, this mega rail project will revolutionize transportation, strengthen Uttarakhand’s economic prospects, and enhance its strategic importance at the national level.
The Rishikesh-Karnaprayag railway project represents a transformational initiative for Uttarakhand, poised to boost religious tourism, improve regional connectivity, and drive economic growth. With its rapid progress, the project is set to reshape transportation in the state and contribute significantly to India’s infrastructure development goals.
As the deadline nears, stakeholders eagerly await the completion of this ambitious railway corridor, which will open new avenues of prosperity and progress for Uttarakhand.
