Early benchmark tests showed Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chip outperforming Apple's A19 Pro processor in the iPhone 17 Pro in multi-core performance and some graphics tests.

The tests, conducted on a Qualcomm-supplied prototype phone, recorded a multi-core Geekbench 6 score of 12,224 for the Snapdragon chip, exceeding the iPhone 17 Pro's score by 2,438 points. In the 3DMark Steel Nomad Light graphics test, the Snapdragon scored 3,180 points, compared with 2,331 for the iPhone 17 Pro.

Qualcomm announced the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 last week. The chip will power upcoming Android devices including the OnePlus 15 and Xiaomi 17 Pro, with Samsung expected to use it in a Galaxy phone early next year. Apple launched the iPhone 17 Pro last month with the A19 Pro chip.

Gizmodo reporter Kyle Barr ran the benchmarks on a dummy phone with a 6.8-inch AMOLED display, 24GB of RAM and a 4,300mAh battery. "If I were to compare that to an iPhone 17 Pro and its A19 Pro silicon, they’re neck and neck in single-core tests, but the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 trounced Apple’s latest in multi-core by 2,438 points," Barr wrote.

In the 3DMark Wild Life Extreme test, the Snapdragon chip scored 7,396 points, equivalent to 44 frames per second, below Qualcomm's claim of 50 frames per second under room temperature conditions. The tests noted performance drops due to overheating and thermal throttling.

Qualcomm officials did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the benchmark results. Barr cautioned that synthetic benchmarks do not reflect full real-world performance and urged waiting for actual device releases.

The first phones with the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 are expected in the coming months. Apple has not announced further details on iPhone 17 Pro performance optimizations.
