Shibu Soren, the legendary tribal leader, founder of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), and a towering figure in Jharkhand’s political history, passed away at 81 after a prolonged illness at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, Delhi. His death was confirmed by his son, Hemant Soren, Jharkhand’s current Chief Minister, who announced, “Today I am left empty, Guruji has left all of us.”

Soren’s demise marks the end of an era for the state’s tribal movement and political landscape. Fondly called ‘Dishom Guru’, Soren was on ventilator support following a kidney-related illness. He had been under treatment since June and breathed his last on Monday morning at 8:56 AM, according to a hospital statement.

A Life Dedicated to the Tribal Cause

Born on January 11, 1944, in Nemra village, Ramgarh, Soren emerged from adversity to lead the fight for Jharkhand’s creation. He founded the JMM in the 1970s to champion the rights of the tribal community, later becoming the face of the movement for a separate state. Under his leadership, Jharkhand was carved out of Bihar in 2000.

Over a 40-year political career, Soren served as Jharkhand’s chief minister three times and represented the state multiple times in Parliament. Despite facing legal controversies and health setbacks, his stature as a leader of marginalized communities remained unchallenged.

Political Legacy and State Mourning

Chief Minister Hemant Soren led the tributes, calling his father his “pillar of support.” Leaders across party lines expressed deep sorrow. The state government has announced official mourning. Soren's legacy continues not just through his family—his son Hemant is expected to steer the JMM ahead—but among millions who saw him as the ‘voice of the voiceless.’

“Shibu Soren’s role in Jharkhand’s statehood movement and his lifetime of advocacy for tribal rights shaped the identity of modern Jharkhand,” said Dr. Shantanu Kumar, a Ranchi-based historian. “His passing leaves a void that will be hard to fill.”

Recent Developments and Political Context

Soren’s death comes amid heightened political activity in Jharkhand. His son Hemant recently resumed his role as Chief Minister following legal developments and continued to oppose policies seen as threats to tribal and constitutional rights. The state assembly is currently in session addressing key budgetary and governance issues.

A Lasting Influence

Despite political ups and downs, Soren remained the embodiment of Jharkhand’s aspirations for dignity and self-determination. His funeral is expected to draw thousands, with tributes from across India’s political spectrum.

“As we mourn Guruji, let us remember his vision for an equitable Jharkhand, where every voice is heard,” said Hemant Soren in his statement, capturing the sentiment that resonated statewide
