In a disturbing escalation of pro-Khalistani activity in Canada, comedian and actor Kapil Sharma has become the latest target. Gunshots were fired at his café in Surrey, British Columbia late Wednesday night. No injuries were reported.
On Thursday morning, Sikhs for Justice (SFJ) released a video claiming ideological support for the act, warning Sharma that “Canada is not your playground.”
The group, known for promoting the Khalistan separatist agenda, did not claim direct operational responsibility but echoed sentiments earlier expressed by Harjeet Singh Laddi, a Germany-based Babbar Khalsa operative, who had posted online that the attack was “a message.”
Canadian law enforcement confirmed the incident and launched a full investigation. “Multiple rounds were fired at the closed café property. We are working with counterterrorism agencies,” said RCMP spokesperson Sgt. Claire Mendel.
The Indian government has demanded immediate and thorough action. “This is a grave threat to Indian nationals and public figures abroad,” a spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs stated.
Security has reportedly been increased at other establishments owned or frequented by Indian celebrities in the Vancouver area.
