New Leadership in Hartford Schools Aims for Positive Change

As the 2024 academic year begins, Hartford Memorial Middle School is embracing change with a new leadership team dedicated to enhancing student experience and addressing behavioral challenges. Principal Cody TanCreti, alongside associate principal Sarah Hisman and dean of students Patrick Lincoln, is determined to foster a sense of belonging among students.

A Response to Past Challenges

The previous school year saw significant unrest, with students staging a walkout to voice their frustrations over classroom disruptions. This year, however, there is a palpable sense of optimism. “To say this school year has been different is an understatement,” says social studies teacher Brycen Nardone. The change in leadership has clarified roles within the administration and created a more positive school environment.

New Leadership Team

TanCreti, who took the helm this year, believes in a proactive approach to student behavior. His background as a former assistant principal has shaped his understanding of the importance of data in managing student dynamics. “We want to create meaningful consequences, not just punishments,” TanCreti stated, emphasizing a shift towards restorative practices.

Interim Superintendent Caty Sutton, who stepped in following the sudden departure of her predecessor, is focused on improving the district's overall educational environment. “There is incredible work happening here,” Sutton remarked, highlighting the community's dedication to students and educators.

Building Connections and Community

A critical component of the new strategy is the establishment of a "no-fly zone" during the first ten minutes of each class. This initiative encourages students to engage and connect with peers and teachers, fostering a sense of community within the school. “It’s about being present and building relationships,” TanCreti explained.

Additionally, the school has implemented a “connect 10” approach that requires students to participate in team-building activities at the beginning of each class, further enhancing interpersonal relationships.

Focus on Mental Health

The introduction of Patrick Lincoln as the dean of students is a pivotal move towards addressing mental health concerns. His background as a mental health clinician informs his strategy for dealing with behavioral issues. “Middle school is hard; our goal is to create an emotionally supportive environment,” he said.

This year, the middle school will also utilize Panorama, a software program designed to gather feedback from students regarding their sense of belonging and overall well-being. This data-driven approach aims to identify and address issues before they escalate.

Looking Ahead

As the new leadership team implements these changes, the community remains hopeful for lasting improvements. “The talk about Hartford middle school will change because there are amazing things happening here,” TanCreti affirmed.

The administration plans to present its findings and progress at an upcoming School Board meeting, where they will discuss the initial impacts of their initiatives.
