In a historic event celebrating the golden jubilee of the Akhil Karnataka Brahmin Mahasabha, Karnataka High Court Judge, Justice Krishna S. Dixit, emphasized the crucial role played by Brahmins in the drafting of the Indian Constitution. Speaking at the two-day Brahmin convention, "Vishwamitra," held on January 18-19, Justice Dixit shed light on the contributions of Brahmin members to the Constitution Drafting Committee and acknowledged the statement of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar on the subject.
Dr. Ambedkar's Acknowledgment
Justice Dixit referenced Dr. B.R. Ambedkar's remarks at the Bhandarkar Institute, where he credited B.N. Rau, a prominent Brahmin and member of the drafting committee, for expediting the constitution-making process. Ambedkar stated that without B.N. Rau's groundwork, drafting the Constitution could have taken an additional 25 years.
Brahmins in the Constitution Drafting Committee
Justice Dixit highlighted that out of the seven members of the drafting committee, three were Brahmins—Alladi Krishnaswamy Ayyar, N. Gopalaswami Ayyangar, and B.N. Rau. He explained that the term "Brahmin" should be associated with "Varna" rather than caste, emphasizing their intellectual contributions to the nation.
Inclusivity in Indian Traditions
Referring to historical figures, Justice Dixit reminded the audience that Vedavyasa, who classified the Vedas, was the son of a fisherwoman, and Valmiki, the author of the Ramayana, belonged to a Scheduled Caste or Tribe. He said, "Have we, as Brahmins, ever looked down upon them? We have been worshipping Lord Rama and his values, which are enshrined in our Constitution."
Judge’s Neutral Stance
Justice Dixit also mentioned his prior involvement with non-Brahmin nationalist movements before taking on his judicial responsibilities. He clarified that his statements were made in the judicial framework, aiming to present a balanced narrative.
Addressing Social Criticism
Another keynote speaker, Justice V. Srishananda, defended the necessity of such gatherings. Responding to critics who questioned the extravagance of the event amidst socio-economic struggles, he said, "These events are essential for bringing the community together and discussing pertinent issues. Why shouldn’t such programs be held?"
