Delhi EV Policy 2.0: CNG Autos to Be Banned From August

What Is Delhi EV Policy 2.0?

The Delhi Government is preparing to implement EV Policy 2.0, a bold and aggressive roadmap to eliminate fossil fuel vehicles from the capital's roads. According to the draft policy, CNG auto-rickshaws will no longer be allowed for registration from August 15, 2025.

Key Implementation Dates for Vehicle Bans

From August 15, 2025

  • No new registration of CNG-powered auto-rickshaws.

  • Renewal of existing CNG auto permits will not be allowed.

  • Only e-auto permits will be issued moving forward.

From August 15, 2025

  • Three-wheeled goods carriers using diesel, petrol, or CNG will also face a registration ban.

From August 15, 2026

  • Registration of petrol, diesel, or CNG two-wheelers will be prohibited in Delhi.

Solid Waste Vehicles Also Targeted

The draft policy recommends phasing out fossil fuel-based vehicles used for solid waste transport, primarily operated by municipal corporations. These vehicles are significant contributors to localized emissions.

What Happens to Older CNG Autos?

All CNG auto-rickshaws over 10 years old must either:

  • Be replaced with electric variants, or

  • Undergo retrofitting with approved battery-operated kits to comply with the new norms.

Transition in Public Transport

The draft also includes clear directions for public bus operators:

  • DTC and DIMTS will only purchase electric buses for city operations.

  • For interstate routes, only BS-IV compliant buses will be permitted.

This strategic shift is expected to modernize Delhi’s public transportation system and drastically reduce vehicular pollution.

Electric Cars and Private Ownership Limitations

To curb unnecessary e-car purchases and ensure equitable implementation, the policy proposes:

“Private electric vehicles can only be purchased by individuals who already own two registered vehicles.”

This clause, applicable after the EV Policy 2.0 notification, is designed to reduce traffic congestion while promoting electric mobility.

Expert Opinions and Stakeholder Reactions

Environmentalists have largely welcomed the policy, calling it “Delhi’s most ambitious climate-forward transport plan.” However, auto unions and delivery vehicle operators have expressed concerns over the transition costs and infrastructure gaps.

CNG Autos Registration + renewal to be banned Aug 15, 2025

What's Next?

The final notification of Delhi EV Policy 2.0 is expected in the coming weeks. The Delhi Government will also launch support schemes for retrofitting and EV financing to aid the transition.

Conclusion: A Cleaner, Greener Capital in the Making

Delhi’s EV Policy 2.0 reflects a massive shift towards sustainability, aiming to curb air pollution, reduce fossil fuel dependency, and promote clean mobility. While challenges in execution remain, the policy is a critical step toward climate-resilient urban development.
