Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed U.S. President Donald Trump's announcement of a plan to end the Gaza conflict on Tuesday.
Modi said the 20-point proposal provides a pathway to long-term peace for Palestinians and Israelis. He urged all parties to support the effort.
Trump presented the plan during a White House meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday. The proposal calls for an immediate end to the war if accepted by both sides, the release of all hostages by Hamas within 72 hours and the establishment of a temporary governing board headed by Trump and former British Prime Minister Tony Blair.
The Gaza conflict began two years ago. It has caused thousands of deaths and displaced many residents.
In a post on X, Modi wrote: "We welcome President Donald J. Trump’s announcement of a comprehensive plan to end the Gaza conflict. It provides a viable pathway to long term and sustainable peace, security and development for the Palestinian and Israeli people, as also for the larger West Asian region." He added: "We hope that all concerned will come together behind President Trump’s initiative and support this effort to end conflict and secure peace."
The plan includes an international security force to disarm Hamas and train Palestinian police. It also calls for Israel to release 250 Palestinians serving life sentences and 1,700 detainees from Gaza. Israel would maintain a security perimeter in Gaza.
A joint statement from the foreign ministers of Qatar, Jordan, United Arab Emirates, Indonesia, Pakistan, Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Egypt welcomed Trump's efforts. Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also endorsed the plan, according to his office.
India's Ministry of External Affairs reiterated its call for a ceasefire, hostage release and humanitarian aid to Gaza, according to spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal. Officials from Hamas were not immediately available for comment.
The plan requires acceptance by Israel and Hamas for implementation. Trump said the United States would back Israel if Hamas rejects the proposal.
