Why Ration Cards are Essential

Ration cards are crucial for accessing essential goods at subsidized rates, such as rice, sugar, and cooking oil, through public distribution systems. They are also necessary for availing various government schemes, especially for women, such as the Women's Rights Grant. The high demand for new ration cards has led to a temporary suspension of distribution, which has now resumed after a year.

Mandatory Documents for New Applicants

In a bid to ensure authenticity and prevent fraudulent claims, the Tamil Nadu government has made it mandatory for all new applicants to submit the following documents:

  1. Death Certificate - Required for removing names of deceased family members from existing ration cards.
  2. Marriage Certificate - Essential for newly married couples applying for a new ration card.

Without these documents, applications will be rejected outright. This stringent measure comes as a response to the rising number of applications and the need for proper verification.

Increase in Application Numbers

The number of applicants for new ration cards has surged dramatically, with the government having received 2.9 lakh applications since 2023. Out of these, approximately 1.3 lakh new cards have already been issued. As of now, applications submitted after June 2024 are under review, further emphasizing the need for verified documentation.
