Bihar Flood Alert: Rising Water Levels Threaten 16 Lakh People

Rising Barrage Water Levels Trigger Flood Alert in Bihar

The Bihar government has issued a flood alert for northern and central regions due to the release of water from Valmikinagar and Birpur barrages. This has resulted in rising water levels in major rivers such as the Kosi, Gandak, and Ganga, affecting over 16.28 lakh people across 13 districts.

Increased Water Discharge from Barrages

The Water Resources Department (WRD) has reported a significant increase in water discharge due to heavy rains in Nepal. According to WRD, 5.79 lakh cusecs of water were released from the Birpur Barrage on the Kosi River, marking the highest discharge since 1968. Similarly, 5.38 lakh cusecs were released from the Valmikinagar Barrage, the largest since 2003.

Monitoring and Safety Measures

Santosh Kumar Mall, Principal Secretary of the WRD, assured that teams are actively monitoring embankments to prevent breaches and ensure prompt action. "The WRD teams are on 24/7 alert to take immediate measures against any signs of erosion or danger," Mall stated.

Impact on Districts

Continuous rainfall has led to rising levels in rivers such as the Gandak, Kosi, Bagmati, Burhi Gandak, Kamla Balan, Mahananda, and Ganga. Authorities in Nepal released substantial volumes of water into the Gandak and Kosi barrages, causing flooding in districts like West and East Champaran, Gopalganj, Araria, Supaul, Katihar, and Purnea.

IMD Weather Predictions

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted heavy rains and warned of potential flash floods in several districts. An IMD bulletin indicated, "These districts are at risk of low to moderate flash floods."

Evacuations and Relief Efforts

Local authorities have been instructed to take preventive measures, with several districts already experiencing flood-like conditions. Nearly 13.5 lakh people have been affected, and many have been relocated to relief camps. Farmers are facing significant losses due to damage to Kharif crops, including paddy and vegetables.

Health and Safety Initiatives

A health camp has been established near JP Setu in Patna to assist flood-affected individuals. This initiative aims to provide necessary medical care and support to those impacted by the floods.

The current flood situation in Bihar is a result of unprecedented rainfall leading to high water discharge levels from barrages and increased river water levels. The government and local authorities are working tirelessly to ensure the safety and well-being of the affected residents.
