Anand Mahindra Confident as Tesla Eyes India Entry

Mahindra Group Chairman Anand Mahindra has expressed strong confidence in his company’s ability to take on Tesla if Elon Musk’s automaker enters the Indian market. Amid reports indicating Tesla has shortlisted showroom locations in New Delhi and Mumbai, Mahindra remains steadfast, highlighting his company’s resilience in the face of global competition.

Mahindra's Response to Tesla’s India Plans

Mahindra responded to a query on social media platform X about how Mahindra would compete with Tesla if it entered the Indian market. His response was firm:

“We have been asked similar questions ever since the opening up of the Indian economy in 1991. How will you compete against Tata, Maruti, and all MNCs? But we're still around,” he stated.

This statement reflects Mahindra’s confidence, rooted in its long history of competing with global automobile giants and emerging stronger in the evolving Indian market.

Mahindra’s Perspective on Global Competition

Mahindra compared Tesla’s possible entry to the arrival of foreign automakers during India's economic liberalization in 1991. He recalled how companies like Daewoo, Ford, General Motors, and Hyundai introduced advanced technology and modern designs, yet Mahindra successfully navigated the competition.

Highlighting Mahindra’s adaptability, he added:

“And working like maniacs to still be around & relevant even a century from now. With you cheering us on, we will make that happen.”

Mahindra’s Growing Focus on EVs

Mahindra has already demonstrated its commitment to the electric vehicle (EV) market with the launch of the XUV.e8 and XUV400. These developments align with India's push for cleaner mobility solutions and show Mahindra’s readiness to compete with Tesla in the EV segment.

Meanwhile, Tesla’s recent job postings in India for roles such as Tesla Advisor, Inside Sales Advisor, and Consumer Engagement Manager indicate its growing interest in the Indian market. The move follows a recent meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Tesla CEO Elon Musk, further fueling speculation about Tesla’s official entry.

Tesla's renewed interest in the Indian market follows a recent meeting between CEO Elon Musk and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The company has posted job advertisements for various positions, including store managers and delivery operations, signaling a serious intent to establish a foothold in India's burgeoning electric vehicle sector.

The Indian government has also taken steps to facilitate Tesla's entry by reducing import duties on electric vehicles. Earlier this month, India lowered the basic customs duty on cars priced above $40,000 from 110% to 70%, aiming to attract foreign manufacturers and promote the adoption of electric vehicles.

Conclusion

As Tesla eyes the Indian market, Mahindra remains undeterred, drawing confidence from its legacy of tackling global competition. With a strong foothold in the domestic auto industry and an expanding EV lineup, Mahindra is prepared to face the challenges that Tesla’s entry might bring. The Indian EV market is set for an exciting phase, with homegrown players and global giants competing for dominance.
